Puppy Love
I know, I know. Island Contessa is a lifestyle brand so why am I talking about puppy love? Well you see, I’ve loved animals since I was a little girl in Independence, Missouri and my neighborhood playmate and I saved birds and squirrels and cats and dogs. Both of my parents had no use for cats but when I found one I just couldn’t rehome, they caved. Dusty lived to the ripe old age of 18 and mostly lived that long because of the sweet care my mother gave her after I left for college.
On my island of St. Croix, we have, like lots of places, problems with strays and over-population and cats and dogs and horses, etc. that need homes. But we are also blessed with some amazing people, who, as I say, do God’s work, in trying to save and find homes for these wonderful animals. I have often said that rescuing an animal does more for rescuing your soul than it does theirs. Non-judgmental, completely giving and pals for the duration of their lives; no one is luckier than the human who adopts.
My husband and I are fortunate to share our lives with a loveable goofball named Huck. I am completely and totally in love with this little ball of fur and, as the saying goes, I hope I’m as good of a person as my dog thinks I am. How about you?
